Rules for Old Guard  Riders Vests

Old Guard Riders Inc is a motorcycle association, not a motorcycle club. As a association, members are NOT required to have or wear any apparel, including a motorcycle vest, bearing the copyright logo of the Old Guard Riders. The wearing of an OGR vest is strictly optional. Like other motorcycle groups and associations, we hope that you would take great pride in your OGR membership and choose to display that pride by wearing the Old Guard Riders logo whenever appropriate.

General Information

Motorcycle vests generally fall into one of two categories: 1.) Club, group or association vests, and 2.) fun vests

The Club, group or association vest can be easily identified by the presence of a large distinctive club, group or association logo patch on the back of the vest. Motorcycle Club vests are strictly regulated by the MC and the MC's patch must be earned in order to be worn.

Group and Association patches may be purchased from the organization and there may or may not be rules concerning patch and/or vest protocol.

A fun vest is a vest that a motorcycle rider puts together bearing NO dominant club, group or association logo patch on the back, but is generally a hodge-podge of patches, pins, buttons, ribbons and other attachments that suit the owner's fancy. Fun vest may bear small logo patches from a variety of groups, organizations or associations that the member belongs to or identifies with. There are no rules involved in this kind of a vest.

Members of the Old Guard Riders are welcome to wear their fun vests to all Old Guard Riders activities. However, if you intend to create and wear a vest bearing the Old Guard Riders large back logo, there are strict rules for doing so. These are not arbitrary rules. Please read these rules carefully before creating an OGR vest. If you are NOT comfortable with these rules, we suggest that you create and wear a fun vest instead.

An OGR vest is defined as any jacket, windbreaker, vest or other apparel worn over a shirt or blouse which bears the large OGR logo (Poppy with Handlebars) on the back which clearly identifies the wearer as a member of Old Guard Riders Inc.

Rules

In order to establish and preserve a uniform standard of appearance for members of the Old Guard Riders, and to insure the safety of its members while participating in activities as members of the Old Guard Riders, the Board of Directors of the OGR has initiated a strict set of rules and guidelines for creating and wearing any apparel bearing the Old Guard Riders logo.

In order to legally enforce these rules and guidelines, the overall design and appearance of the OGR logo vest has been trademarked. Any deviation from the prescribed design is a violation of the OGR trademark.

Critical Guidelines

  1. You may NEVER place any patch or other attachment on your vest in conjunction with your OGR membership that denotes the OGR as a fraternal-type motorcycle club. That means you may NEVER place the words "MOTORCYCLE CLUB" or the letters "MC" on your vest.

  2. You may NEVER place any patch or other attachment on your vest that denotes or implies the Old Guard Riders as making any territorial claim. That means you can NEVER put a STATE, CITY, or REGION or the name of a specific location on a vest bearing the Old Guard Riders' logo.

  3. You may NEVER place anything on your vest that denotes alliance with or allegiance to any other motorcycle club, group or association. This includes, but is not limited to, pins, patches, buttons, ribbons or any other attachment bearing the name, logo or other trademarked text or image of another club, group or association.

  4. You may NEVER wear any item bearing the OGR name and/or logo on a vest displaying the dominant logo of any other motorcycle club, group or organization. Such association of logos can be interpreted as an implied alliance or allegiance with that club.

Adherence to these rules is absolutely critical. OGR has worked very hard to become an accepted part of the motorcycle community at large. Violation of these RULES of RESPECT could endanger our good standing with other motorcycle clubs, groups and organizations and members of the various state Confederation of Clubs where OGR members may expect to operate.

If you need more information about the difference between types of motorcycle organizations, refer to the Frequently Asked Questions page. If you are unsure about a specific patch you would like to wear, please contact OGR and receive clarification before placing it on your vest.

Always remember when dealing with other motorcycle clubs, groups, and associations, RESPECT is the key word. Treat them with respect. Generally, they will reciprocate. Never assume anything.

Old Guard Rider Patches

The Old Guard Riders' logo is federally copyrighted. OGR logo patches , as well as all other OGR patches, pins, buttons, ribbons or any other attachment bearing the name and/or logo of the OGR are created to exact specifications. Back of the Vest

  • The back of the vest must bear the complete Old Guard Riders logo trilogy of patches. This trilogy includes the center logo patch bearing the copyrighted "Poppy with Handlebars", the upper rocker bearing either the text "Old Guard" or "The Sisterhood", and the lower rocker bearing the text "Riding for Vets".

  • No other patches, pins, buttons or other attachments may be added to the back of the vest.

Front of the Vest

  • As you are facing the vest, the right upper portion of the vest at the chest/breast level is primarily reserved for club patches, pins, ribbons and other attachments. This includes OGR National, State or Group Title patches, OGR name patches, veterans patches and/or similar personal items including military items.

  • As you are facing the vest, the left upper portion of the vest at the chest/breast level is reserved for personal or patriotic patches, pins, ribbons and other attachments including personal military items.

  • Inflammatory, demeaning, profane, or other inappropriate patches, pins, ribbons and other attachments are not permitted. This includes any text or image regardless of how the message is conveyed. This includes expressed, implied insinuated, depicted or conveyed by any other manner.

Wearing the OGR Vest

The rules prescribed for the creation and wearing of an OGR vest are in strictly in accordance with generally accepted motorcycle club protocol.

This does not mean that the OGR vest is recognized, accepted or welcomed everywhere in the nation.  Each state, and sometimes areas within a state, are controlled by a "Dominant" Motorcycle Club. That dominant motorcycle club has the authority to regulate which motorcycle clubs, groups and associations may wear their logo patch while operating in the Dominant MC area. Failure to recognize and comply with OGR rules can result in unpleasant consequences for you and Old Guard Riders Inc. This is NOT an idle threat.

Policy

If, at any time, you are confronted concerning your OGR vest,  IMMEDIATELY remove your vest and DO NOT put it back on until you are well away from the situation. DO NOT GET INTO A CONFRONTATION OVER A PATCH. Old Guard Riders is NOT liable for any injuries or damage that you may incur for failure to follow this policy.

Old Guard Riders reserves the right to refuse sale of its copyrighted logo material to anyone at any time with or without cause. OGR further reserves the right to cancel the membership of anyone who knowing and deliberately violates these rules to the detriment of themselves, another OGR member or the OGR organization, and to pursue any and all legal and civil remedies as may be provided by law against such an offender.

If you are unsure about whether or not the OGR logo is approved within the area where you intend to ride with the OGR logo patch displayed, contact National Old Guard Riders Inc.
